TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation will celebrate its 74th annual Cherokee National Holiday over Labor Day weekend, including an inter-tribal powwow, parade, and other longtime cultural favorites.
The Cherokee National Holiday typically draws more than 100,000 visitors from across the country. Main Holiday activities will be held Sept. 4-6 in Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation.
“The Cherokee National Holiday is one of the most meaningful weekends of the year for our nation,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. “It’s a chance to welcome citizens home, celebrate our culture and traditions, and reflect on the progress we’ve made together. We invite everyone to come and celebrate with us and enjoy the variety of events.”
Chief Hoskin and Deputy Principal Chief Bryan Warner will look back at the past year and look ahead to the future during the State of the Nation event in historic downtown Tahlequah on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee National Peace Pavilion.
This year, the tribe will also present for the fourth time the Dalalapalooza live music concert at One Fire Field. The concert will be a variety of folk, bluegrass, country, rock, and pop music and will be held Friday, Sept. 4, and Saturday, Sept. 5, from 4-10 p.m. Concert goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the entertainment.
Other events for the 74th Cherokee National Holiday include longtime favorites like traditional games, sporting events such as softball, stickball, the Cherokee National Holiday quilt show and art show, golf, the Holiday Veterans 5K and Fun Run, as well as cornhole and fishing tournaments and much more.
The Inter-Tribal Powwow, which brings in many visitors every year, will return on Sept. 4-5 at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds, where dancers will go head-to-head in competition for top honors and over $35,000 in prize money.
“Every year, the Cherokee National Holiday reminds us of the strength of our communities and the importance of coming together as a nation,” said Deputy Principal Chief Bryan Warner. “From the powwow to the parade to Dalalapalooza, this weekend has something for every generation to enjoy, and we’re proud to welcome Cherokee citizens and visitors alike to Tahlequah.”
Another annual event includes the Cherokee National Holiday parade, which will be in downtown Tahlequah on Saturday, Sept. 5. Chief Hoskin, Deputy Chief Warner and members of the Council of the Cherokee Nation will join together for the annual State of the Nation following the parade at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee National Peace Pavilion. State of the Nation will be live streamed on the Cherokee Nation Facebook page and YouTube page for those who cannot make it in person. This is the eighth and final State of the Nation of the Hoskin/Warner administration.
More than 250 food and craft vendors are expected to attend multiple Cherokee National Holiday celebrations this year.

The Cherokee National Holiday commemorates the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution in 1839, which re-established the tribe’s government in Indian Territory after forced removal from the Cherokees’ original homelands in the Southeast.
