TULSA, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation will celebrate Cherokee families who recently moved into a North Tulsa apartment complex, the first affordable housing rental projects in that community in the tribe’s history, that is soon to be bought by the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation.
The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation (HACN) entered an agreement with Green Country Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH) to manage seven units on Harvard Avenue and purchase the units by the end of 2026. The units will be leased to Cherokee Nation citizens from the Housing Authority’s already established waitlist for low rental apartments.
Each unit is 840 square feet with two bedrooms and one bathroom. Three of the units are ADA units, and one is equipped for the visually and hearing-impaired.
Once the units are completely leased out, HACN plans to purchase them within the next couple months with funds from the Housing, Jobs and Sustainable Communities Act (HJSCA). Under the Hoskin/Warner Administration’s landmark HJSCA, the tribe commits $40 million in tribal funds to housing and community infrastructure every three years into perpetuity, on top of federal housing dollars.
